Parenting

This is a quick guide exploring how to make the decision to become a parent:

My circumstances now.

If you are feeling uncertain about the decision its a good thing to take some time to consider why.

Is it to do with the father?
Is it to do with other people knowing?
Is it a problem with the timing?

How will I cope?

Remember that list you made earlier on the previous page? We asked you to make a list of your strengths and passions.

These are examples of your internal strength which are very important for decision making.

Let’s now look at external support, perhaps from your friends and family or organisations that support people through pregnancy and parenting.

The next heading ‘what help is available’ will take you through some of these options.

What help is available?

The help available to you is dependent on your circumstances and specific needs.

When looking for support if you decide to continue the pregnancy and become a mother, it’s important that you don’t feel subjected to shame, criticism or unsolicited advice.

You could begin looking for a group and a community you can turn to who will offer you support and love in this new journey you are on.

We have created a list of places to find support in our Find Help page.

Regrets?

If you’re worried about feeling regrets about becoming a parent, we encourage you to have some conversations with parents you know, or seek them out if you don’t know any.

Having conversations with parents about the joy’s and challenges could help you make a decision.

How do you feel?

Spend some time imagining yourself as a mum.

Make a note of any feelings or reactions you have to this and be sure to talk about it with a trusted person.
